F**k Around & Get Paid
The Simple Way to Double Your Income
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You're good at what you do. You know it somewhere deep down. But if you're not doing your most fulfilling work and getting paid at a level that makes your eyes pop – you're underselling yourself. And the fix isn't working harder. It's communicating smarter.
In this episode, I share how – literally overnight – I doubled my own income applying for a corporate job. I also share how a client landed a VP role within a week, and how another client made $250K in additional revenue adding just two calls a month. The thread through all of it? Powerful communication.
I break down the two-part problem keeping most entrepreneurs spinning their wheels, why your most valuable skills are completely invisible to you, and the three principles of communication that change everything – in business, in corporate, and in life.
If you've ever felt like the best kept secret in your industry, this episode is your wake-up call.
In this episode you'll learn:
- Why you're underselling yourself – and it has nothing to do with your skills
- The two-part block keeping you from being seen and paid at your level
- Why people only buy at the level of their own belief – and what that means for how you show up
- The three principles of powerful communication that helped Jen double her income overnight
- Why asking one question beats a thousand words of convincing every time
- What it actually means to own your sh*t and get paid to be you

Hi, and welcome to Fuck Around and Get Paid, the podcast where fun, flow, and strategy meet to help you get paid for doing what you love. I'm your host, Jennifer Liss, and in this episode, we're gonna talk about how to double your income simply by communicating your value. Let's dive in. Hey there, friend. Welcome back to the podcast. I'm not kidding when I say that you can double your income by simply communicating your value. This is 100% true. And I cannot wait to get into it and dive into exactly why the best business owners are powerful communicators. And I'm going to help you understand how you can be a powerful communicator who communicates your value to the world so you can get FN paid and have some fun. How's that sound? Okay. This episode is for you. If you know that you have some skills, you've got some talents, you know it somewhere deep down, you know whether you're readily admitting that to yourself or not, you've got them. But you're not doing the most fulfilling work that you absolutely could in getting paid at a level that makes your eyes sometimes pop a little, huh? Yes, you can. You absolutely can make that kind of income. And I'll tell you why. And you know, deep down, this might be for you if you know that you are underselling yourself and that this is something that you're ready to change. You are ready to change this about yourself. You know it's a thing, girlfriend. You know it's a thing and you're ready to change it. So here's what I'm gonna tell you in this episode is three stories of women who have made more income, more impact, doing more rewarding work. I'm also gonna tell you what worked for them, and I'm gonna tell you the reason that it maybe, maybe, maybe it is working for you. But I guarantee you can double whatever income you're currently making by applying this concept. And we're gonna talk about the principles of powerful communication that you can use today. Now, communication might sound boring, but I promise you to not make this episode boring. Okay. I'm not about boring. We are not, we are not boring people. Uh when people are actually in their magic and in your most beautiful essence, you're not boring at all. Okay. Story number one: this is about me. Me, me, me, me, me. I had a job that I wanted to apply for. This was back in 2021. There was this job that came up. I was definitely starting a business on a side on the side and had it running. And I also was looking to apply for this job. Really in general, I was looking for any and all opportunities that I could possibly find to apply my skills in a new way because girl, I was ready to grow. I was so ready to grow and I just didn't know how. But I will say I had been expanding my gifts in my role. I was a mere copywriter in my role, but I had been doing side projects, lots and lots of side projects. I was working with talent and development. I was working specifically, our current organization did not have an employee experience program, but I was doing tons of research on employee experience and the value that that brings to organizations and the reason why it might be something that our organization is part of or brings in. I'd been doing a bunch of research and putting this together for the organization. I was very interested in this idea of helping people to thrive in their roles. And what I started to get really obsessed with was helping people to grow in their roles and make more money, because I could see that there were a lot of people that had such incredible gifts and they were so talented and they just kind of kept doing the same thing. So that was where I was placing my focus. Meanwhile, I myself was discontent and cramped in my own job. And ultimately, that discontent and cramped thing, I realized for me that at least in its current function and the way that it runs, and in my experience, corporate really was not working for me. It's ultimately why I'm an entrepreneur. And you might feel this way too. Like there's just certain things about those kinds of jobs that do not work for me. And entrepreneurship really does because I can thrive and I everything's new every single day, and all of the cool things that I love about entrepreneurship that I ultimately was not getting in that role. But I saw this job description. Joey and I were moving to Portland, Oregon. And I had just heard from my organization that they were not going to allow me to keep my role long term. So I was on the lookout for new roles that could possibly work for me. This one job description, it was like the holy grail. Like, oh, it was this amazing job. And the pay was incredible to me. And I was like, this sounds amazing, but it also felt it, it felt like I could have this, like I could feel it, I could have it. This is possible for me, but it also felt like such a stretch. And who the F am I to do that? So I show the job description to a coworker. It's somebody who had really been believing in me. I showed it to him and he agreed. He said, Wow, you do have a lot of the experience, even though your role doesn't say it. You've got a lot of the experience that applies to that description. But something in the way that he, it's like he didn't give it the blessing that I was looking for. He he was definitely supportive, but I didn't feel him just say, hell yeah, Jen, go do it. So I didn't apply. We're moving. So we move across the country to Portland. And six weeks later, we're kind of getting settled in. And I go back on LinkedIn and I'm looking at jobs, I'm looking at roles, and there it was. It was still there, you guys. Not believe it. It was still there. And so I said, fuck it. I'm gonna apply for this job. So I did. And I said, you know what? If I'm going to apply, if I'm gonna do this, I am going to show exactly who the F I am. And mind you, I had just moved across the country. I was feeling really powerful. I was really zhuzhed up. I had like that oomph and that amp behind me. Like I can do anything. I applied, I interviewed overnight, I doubled my income and more. They gave me more money than I asked for. It was amazing. Okay. I'm gonna tell you what was special about this, but I'm for next, I'm gonna tell you about somebody else because all of these are so it's so powerful. And I want you to, even whether you're in a corporate job or you're in a business, I just want you to receive this. Just receive these stories. These are real people. That was me. This is somebody else who I know. So I was coaching a client and I was co-coaching. I was coaching with another person that this person mentioned in the conversation that it was her dream to be a VP at her company. She also had been considering considering being an entrepreneur and building her business. And she said this VP thing, just kind of in passing, like, you know, it would be so cool. I have this idea of being VP at the company. Meanwhile, she had really come to the coaching for building her business. And so that's where most of the time was being spent. But I said to her, you know, by the end of this week, you could potentially be the VP at that company. You could be, you could have that. And somebody just acknowledging the belief that she had in herself, like she knew deep down that was part of her. She would not have had this dream if she didn't know that it was possible. And to have somebody acknowledge and just say, dude, that's 100% possible. I'm hearing all of your skills and all of your experience of what you have done, and that you have this dream and you totally see the opportunity for your company, you could do it. And I'm not kidding you guys. By the end of that week of coaching, she had it. She'd been given the job. Given the job, like had had no conversations with anybody. She just had this dream. By the end of the week, she was given that V role. What did she do to make that happen? I'm going to tell you in a minute. Okay, now I want to tell you about the next person. This was a client who was selling a low-ticket membership for less than $100 a month, very normal price for a low ticket membership. It's great. It's a really, really good membership. But this person was really tired of continuously launching, but the low ticket wasn't quite bringing in the numbers. So together we worked and worked on some messaging and positioning and determined that it was possible to add another tier. So greater value, more rewarding to this individual. And it would also, it would feel better all the way across, but there would be this extra tier that was like extra special for her higher level people who were ready to come into it. We launched that. She made an extra $250,000 of income only by adding two calls a month to her docket. Now that level is full of all kinds of other amazing things, but that's all that she had to do. And it makes her so much happier because she's able to stretch herself. So look at all of these situations, whether it was mine, the VP client, or this client who added this tier to her membership. It was more income, more impact. I had more impact in my role, so much more impact, even more than I could have ever dreamed, because I ended up leading communications at the company for about three months when a bunch of people spontaneously quit. And um, the VP, way, way, way more impact that she's able to have at that company. She's making so much more money in that role. And then obviously the 250K additional income for not having to launch for doing something that felt so much more aligned for this person. Now I'm not saying that any of these are your scenarios, but what I want you to see is that that bit of a stretch and a bit of belief and the standing in it gives you more rewarding work, more income, and something that's going to stretch you in the best, yummiest way. So you're not going to feel that discontent anymore. What my beautiful friend Misty Springer calls divine discontent. When you are discontented, that it means that you are being guided into a new divine direction, into receiving more, into giving more, that reciprocity when you expand. What I mean by giving more is not depleting the shit out of yourself. I mean giving in a break greater capacity by standing in your gifts. So what actually happened in each of these situations? And I've lived this, you guys, okay. And I see it all the time, which is why I have created a new immersive experience, own your shit, specifically for this, because I see it. It's so clear as day. We suck at communicating our value. And that's okay. It's especially women, okay? We suck at communicating our value. We've not been taught to do this. We've been taught by cultural conditioning, we've been taught by our familial conditioning, we've been taught by school, we've been taught by so many things. It's just inherent in our culture that we have to prove our value. And so we suck at communicating it. And I know value is such an effing buzzword, especially in bro marketing, but you have such valuable gifts that are meant to be given to the world, and we're just not standing in them because we're looking for that coworker to believe in it. We're looking for somebody to tell us, somebody just finally tell me and believe in me when what we really need is our own belief. At the same time, it does freaking help to have somebody look at it and say, yes, and here's how. Now it doesn't matter if you're an entrepreneur, you're working in corporate, or you're volunteering at your church. If you are not doing the most fulfilling work and getting paid at the level that makes your eyes pop, you are underselling yourself. You're not communicating it in the way that you can be communicating it to show the income and impact that you can create. The key to having so much more fun and making so much more money is that it's just challenging enough and you're getting paid enough to match that. That's where we've got a glitter for glitter exchange. And if that's not happening, syanara to your fulfillment, syanara to your paycheck. Okay. This is a two-part problem. You have skills. Here's the here's problem number one. You have skills that are totally invisible to you. You don't see them. They come so naturally to you, or for whatever reason, you're not seeing them. You don't know how good you are at the thing that you are really good at. And just straight up, I'll be vulnerable. Somebody said to me, You are such a strong communicator. And I needed somebody to just like snap the whip at me and say yes, so that I can stand in that, so that I can be an even more powerful communicator. We all need that. We need the mirror. Okay. So maybe like me, you're just really good at create communicating the minutiae, but maybe you're really good at thinking big. Maybe you're really good at helping people to feel courageous. Maybe you're really good at helping people to feel seen. Maybe you're really good at just having fun. So valuable, my friends. These seemingly intangible skills are actually the most valuable things. They're so valuable. So, this problem is twofold. It's one, you don't see it and you don't see it as the value that it is. And two, you're not clearly communicating it for the value that it is. That's literally it. This is stopping you from making so much more money. It's literally your income cap that you are at right now is really hinged on you fixing these two things so that you can cross this ravine between the discontented you and the one who is riding her blazing high horse out into the sunset. Here's why it's so hard to see. The blocks around you seeing yourself clearly are so real. We literally need a mirror. We need people in our lives who will do this for us, which is why we hire coaches, which is why we come into cohorts, which is why we step into spaces where it can be reflected back at us. Okay. The people in our lives are too nice to tell us the truth. They think that they're being loving, but they're really coddling us. Our clients already love us. So they're just going to say back to us what we're already doing. So we can't get this genuine, truthful perspective, but you need it. If you're going at your next level, like if you're Aaron Judge and you're batting and it's like you're a great batter, people could just say, You're so good. You're so good at what you do. You're just keep doing it. You're so good at what you do. But the best of the best, and you, my friend, are the best of the best. You're meant to be the best of the best. I'm telling you, if you're listening to this podcast, you are. Aaron Judge needs somebody to say, dude, your elbows just like half an inch too low. You need that truthful perspective. You need somebody to shine the light and to show you. And so when we do see it, we're able to do something about it. But here's the real reason that you're not seeing it. So there's that, but there's also you're not seeing it, okay? Because your nervous system is stopping you from seeing it. Your nervous system wants you to keep hitting it with that elbow just a little bit too low. It wants you to stay right where you are because you, if you succeeded, who knows where it would take you. It might take you out of away from the New York Yankees and over to somewhere else where they're going to pay you $500 million. It's going to take you somewhere else. And your system is so scared of that. So it will have you actively avoiding it. This is it's intentional blindness by your nervous system and it's keeping you spinning your wheels. Business owners, it's costing you money. It's costing you money. Okay. Hear me here. People are not just buying your skills. They are looking for three things. They're looking to feel seen, they are looking to believe in themselves, and they are looking to be asked, not told. So, specifically, business owners, when it comes to powerful communication, communicating who you are, what you do, and how you can create impact in the world. You can also think of this through the corporate lens, but I'm specifically talking to entrepreneurs because I know so many of you are entrepreneurially minded. Your people need to hear in your communications. This is how you become a powerful communicator, okay? To communicate your value. Your value is seeing them, like see them. They want you to know that you see them, you see their struggle before you pitch anything or position anything. How do they feel seen? It's the foundation that everything is built on. When I went into uh into apply for that job, I thought about okay, how do I help them to see that I see them? I see their company, I see their struggle, I see what it is that they're needing and why they're hiring somebody for this position. Why are they hiring you for this position? Now, this is something that we really discount this this belief in self. Your buyers or the people who are who are going to employ you, they need to believe in themselves. This company, for me, for the person who was a VP, and for and for the person who was upgrading her new tier to her membership, people only buy at the level of their own belief. So when I pitched myself to this job, and what I recommended that this VP, now VP, do, is to tell them that you believe in their vision. I believe in your vision. Here's how we're gonna bring it to life. I believe in your vision. Like you, dude, listening to this podcast, I wouldn't be creating this podcast if I did not believe in your vision. I would not be creating cohorts like own your shit if I did not believe in your vision. I fully believe in it. I know it's possible for you if you do these things. I'm telling you, like it's if you do this thing, it's possible for you. So while my coworker agreed that I had the experience, he didn't help me believe in myself. I needed something to help me do that. Moving across the country helped me. I was also coaching with somebody at the time who helped me. But that's the difference between somebody saying, Yeah, you could do that, and somebody who actually sees you and sees your gifts. That's what I did for that VP. I said, Oh, I see that. That's what I do for my clients. Those of you who are who have been working with me, I see it in you and I will reflect that back and give you actionable things. That's why that company hired me. That's why she moved to VP. And it's why that person with the membership had so many people buy in to this next level. Are you helping people believe? Okay, next. People need to be asked, not told. And this is the thing. Those of you who are sages who have taken my quiz, asked, not told. Oh, this is the hardest thing for our nervous system. Ask questions, let them answer, stand in the awkwardness. I asked questions for that job. I sat in that interview and I asked questions and I let them answer. I said, What do you hope that somebody will create? What is it that you're really looking for in somebody? What is it that you really see for your big picture vision for this organization? Let them answer. Same goes for your client. What do you see possible for yourself? What is really standing between you and that next level? That client that I had, she wrote a novel to her boss about why she deserved the promotion. And I told her, No, no, that's a this is great, that's beautiful. Ask this question instead. She said, What? I said, Yes, ask this one question instead. That one question is the reason she got she got the job. So understand this, that these are principles of powerful communication. And as somebody who desires to expand in this life, powerful communication and really standing in your goods, standing in your gifts, owning your shit, you can easily double your income by applying any of those things that I just shared with you. Not because you say more things, but because you say the right things, because you see people, because you ask them questions, because you hold in your power and your belief, and in turn give them more belief in their vision. That's the ultimate. That's the ultimate goal. We all want to grow together. All want to expand together. I want to see you this year go to the moon, just like those astronauts just went to the moon. This is your moonshot year. Make the moonshot. My friends, and I created again an entire program that is just for that. It is called Own Your Shit. The doors are open.
